Here's the deal, a (supposedly) teen –as she would have to be, seeing the uniforms, or in her senior year having talked about Brown and all, though I think she and thus other casts looked too old– girl, Norah (Jewish pretty will hurt your eyes kind of pretty), the daughter of a well-known recording producer (who owned the Electric Lady Studios, recording studio which back in the 70's recorded Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and the Rolling Stones.. and of course my beloved Peter Frampton), loved music and accordingly this boy, Nick (cute dorky looking I would've totally dig), who had a band where most of its members were gay (except for him). They shared the same taste (as you would gave guessed) in music and were aficionado of the band Where's Fluffy. Unfortunately, Nick was still madly in love with his ex-girlfriend, Tris. In poor attempt of winning Tris back, Nick made all sorts of mixed CDs, where Tris would throw them right away and picked up by Norah, who happened to be one of the girls Tris hung out with. O yeah, Norah and Tris –are of course– hate each other.
Long story short, Norah, her best friend Caroline, and their mutual friend Tris went to a gig, where Nick's band (The Jerk Offs or Shit Sandwich or Fistful of Assholes) was performing. In order to make Nick off her back, Tris went out with Gary. To get Tris off her back, Norah told her that she has a boyfriend, which –as you may have also guessed– was Nick. Confusing-story-you'd-better-see-it-yourself-for-a-clearer-picture short, almost everybody got jealous and turned into such a mess but everything ended up okay.
Anyway, the best part about this movie is that if you like emo or those new-found genres of music, it has some of the coolest songs. The music background along the movie probably what will distract you from the tacky story. Well, at least for me it was. I didn't really familiar with the songs or knew the title of the soundtracks, but I found that the soundtracks are pretty good. I mean a lot of non-musical movies used music as their selling point, Once, Heima, etc. and you can really be cynical about the plot and the story, but seriously, this is one of the feel-good-could've-been-better movies with the coolest soundtracks.
Forgive me, for having already missed the fun of early twenties, personally, my reason to stay until the end of the movie is not finding out whether Nick would be with Norah (as of course they would, sorry to break it to you), but only to enjoy the rush of finding Where's Fluffy had their secret performance along with the background songs. And of course, the view of Manhattan (the island, not the cocktail) never fails you.
Taken as a whole, even with the unanswered question of why the band boys have to be gay, I would give three stars for the story and five stars for the soundtracks and ambiance. I still have faith in Gray's Papaya supported flicks. And I do like this movie.
